On Monday, September 28, one of the biggest stars in action was shooter Esha Singh. She competed in the women’s 25-metre pistol event and won a silver medal, showing off her steady aim and cool nerves in front of a big crowd. Teammates Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat also competed in the same event.
Another big name all day long was Avinash Sable, India’s defending champion in the men’s 3000-metre steeplechase. Sable is an Indian Army soldier who came back from a serious knee injury to compete again at the highest level. The steeplechase is one of the most exciting distance running events. Runners must jump over barriers and a water jump during the race — it is like running a long-distance race on an obstacle course!
In cricket, India’s match against Afghanistan in the quarterfinals was called off because of heavy rain. Since India had a higher ranking, they advanced to the semifinals automatically. India’s men’s squash team also beat China 3-0 in team play.
Athlete Parul Chaudhary already earned a bronze medal in the women’s 3000-metre steeplechase on Day 9, even setting a national record. Day 10 brings even more athletics finals, with eight events scheduled including the long jump, javelin, and relay races.
