Asia’s Biggest Sports Party Begins! The Asian Games Open Today in Nagoya, Japan

Quick Summary

The 2026 Asian Games opened tonight in Nagoya, Japan. More than 11,000 athletes from 45 countries are ready to compete. This is the biggest sports event in all of Asia!

What Happened?

Tonight, the Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya lit up for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Asian Games. The official start time was 6:00 PM local time in Japan.

This is the 20th time the Asian Games have been held. Think of it like Asia’s own version of the Olympics — with dozens of sports and thousands of incredible athletes. Japan is hosting for the third time ever. The last two times were Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.

The Games are officially called Aichi-Nagoya 2026. They will run until October 4. That’s 16 full days of competition! Athletes will compete in 43 different sports across 54 venues.

The official mascot is called HONOHON. It was designed by Japanese artist Yoshiyuki Nakagawa. HONOHON blends a fiery athlete’s spirit with the Shachihoko — a mythical creature that looks like a tiger’s head on a fish’s body. That creature is the famous symbol of Nagoya Castle.

The opening ceremony’s theme is called “Harmonic Heart Beat.” Renowned Japanese filmmaker Yukihiko Tsutsumi created the show.

Some new sports are making their very first appearance at this year’s Games. Teqball — a sport that mixes football and table tennis — is one of the exciting newcomers.

Why Does It Matter?

The Asian Games are the second-largest multi-sport event in the world. Only the Summer Olympics are bigger. Imagine all the countries of Asia sending their best athletes to one place. That’s what’s happening right now in Japan!

For many athletes, this is their biggest competition ever. It is also a huge moment for Japan. Hosting a major sports event takes years of planning and hard work by thousands of people.

The Games also bring countries together through sport. Athletes who compete against each other often become friends. That’s a pretty wonderful thing.

Big Words

  • Multi-sport event — a big competition where athletes play many different sports all at the same time, in the same host city
  • Opening ceremony — the special show at the start of a big sporting event that welcomes athletes from all countries
  • Mascot — an animal or character chosen to represent a team or event and bring good luck
  • Debut — the very first time something appears or is used; brand new

Fun Fact

Nagoya’s famous castle has a golden Shachihoko — the mythical tiger-fish creature — sitting on its roof. These golden ornaments are so famous that the city put a version of the creature right into the Games’ mascot, HONOHON!

Think About It

If you could invent a brand-new sport to add to the Asian Games, what would it be — and what skills would it take to win?
