Welcome Home! Astronauts Return After 241 Days in Space

What Happened?
NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev climbed into their Soyuz MS-28 capsule in the middle of the night. The spacecraft undocked from the space station at about 3 a.m. Eastern time. About three and a half hours later, it landed on the wide, flat grasslands of Kazakhstan.
The whole trip home took less time than a cross-country flight. But the journey those three astronauts just finished was anything but short. They launched on Thanksgiving Day in 2025. By the time they touched down today, they had been in space for 241 days.
During that time, they circled Earth 3,856 times. They traveled more than 102 million miles total. That is roughly the same as flying to the Sun and back!
After landing, recovery teams helped the crew out of the capsule. They then flew by helicopter to the nearby city of Karaganda. Chris Williams will head home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Why Does It Matter?
This was Chris Williams’s very first trip to space. It was also the first mission for cosmonaut Sergei Mikaev. Spending so many months in space is a big deal for the human body.
In space, there is no gravity pulling things down. Astronauts float around instead of walking. When they return to Earth, their legs feel wobbly and their hearts have to work harder again. Scientists study how bodies recover to help plan future missions — including trips to the Moon and eventually Mars.
The return also officially started a brand-new chapter on the station. NASA astronaut Jessica Meir is now in command of Expedition 75. New research and new experiments can begin.
