The Secret Code of Birdsong! Every Bird on Earth Uses Just 8 Musical Notes

But scientists now know that is not quite true. A research team led by Quentin Bacquelé at Saint-Étienne University and Montpellier University in France decided to find out whether all that beautiful variety follows any hidden rules.

They gathered a huge library of recordings from online community science databases — more than 116,000 songs from 3,160 species of passerine birds. Passerines are perching birds: robins, sparrows, warblers, swallows, and more. They make up over 60 percent of all bird species on Earth.

The team fed all those recordings into an AI. The computer searched for repeating patterns — sound shapes that showed up again and again across thousands of different species.

What it found was stunning. All of that incredible variety is built from just eight basic sound patterns, called acoustic motifs. There are three kinds of trills, three kinds of whistles, harmonic stacks, and chaotic notes. That is it. Eight patterns, like eight letters in a secret alphabet.

On average, each species uses about five of these eight patterns in its songs. Nearly two-thirds of all songs mix several patterns together into something more complex — the way you can combine just a few musical notes into an endless number of melodies.

The study also found that where a bird lives shapes which patterns it uses. Birds in thick, noisy tropical forests tend to use simple, flat whistles that travel long distances through the dense trees. Birds in open woodlands and fields, like those in North America and Europe, use faster, more complex combinations — because their habitat is less noisy and they can get away with richer messages.

Why Does It Matter?

This discovery is a bit like finding out that all human languages on Earth share the same small set of basic sounds. It tells scientists something deep about how birdsong evolved and how animals communicate.

Scientists also hope these eight building blocks could become a tool for tracking how birds are changing their songs in response to things like noise pollution and climate change. A bird that can no longer use its favourite sound patterns may be in trouble.
