What Happened?
Researchers at the University of Illinois built a tiny virtual-reality maze for mice. The mice had to feel their way through the maze using only two special whiskers. That’s like trying to find your way through a dark room using just two fingers on one hand!
While the mice made choices, scientists carefully recorded signals inside their brains. What they found was a big surprise.
For a long time, scientists believed the brain worked like an assembly line. First, your senses pick up information — like what you touch or see. That information travels upward step by step. Eventually, it reaches the top section of your brain — the part that “thinks.” Then a decision is made, and the signal travels back down.
But the Illinois team found something different. They discovered that decision-making signals appear much earlier — right down in the brain region that handles touch. It is as if the mailroom at the bottom of a tall building was already sorting and answering the mail before it even reached the boss on the top floor!
Even more interesting: higher parts of the brain were actually sending signals back down very quickly, forming fast loops. The whole brain was working together all at once — not one step at a time.
The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Why Does It Matter?
This discovery could change how scientists build computers and artificial intelligence. Right now, most AI systems work like the old idea of the brain — information goes in one direction, from the bottom to the top. But our real brains use fast back-and-forth loops at every level.
If engineers can design AI to work the same way, future computers might make better decisions while using much less electricity. Think of it like the difference between a heavy old car and a light, speedy bicycle that still gets you where you need to go.
The lead scientist, Professor Yurii Vlasov, said the brain’s code is still mostly an unknown language — but discoveries like this help us read more of it.
