Dino Under the Dirt! A Giant New Dinosaur Was Found Under a Construction Site in Brazil

What Happened?
Back in 2021, construction crews were digging near the city of Davinópolis in the northeastern state of Maranhão, Brazil. As they dug, workers uncovered something enormous: a gigantic thigh bone. The bone alone measured about 1.5 meters — taller than most adults!
Scientists were called in to investigate. After years of careful study, researchers have now officially named and described the new species. They published their findings in a respected scientific journal called the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.
The dinosaur is called Dasosaurus tocantinensis. The second part of its name honors the nearby Tocantins River. It was a sauropod — the group of dinosaurs famous for their very long necks and long tails. Sauropods include some of the largest animals ever to walk the Earth.
Dasosaurus was about 20 meters long. To picture that, imagine two full-size school buses lined up bumper to bumper. It lived roughly 120 million years ago, during a time called the Early Cretaceous period.
Here’s where it gets really interesting. The closest relative scientists know of is a dinosaur found in Spain, called Garumbatitan morellensis. That means these two dinosaurs — found on different continents — probably shared ancient ancestors.
How did a Brazilian dinosaur get so closely related to a Spanish one? Scientists think their shared ancestors traveled from Europe through North Africa to South America, around 130 million years ago. Back then, the Atlantic Ocean was much smaller and hadn’t fully opened up yet. Land connections that no longer exist allowed animals to wander across what are now very different continents.

Every new dinosaur discovery tells us a little more about life on ancient Earth. Dasosaurus also gives us clues about how the continents we know today slowly broke apart over millions of years.
It also reminds us that amazing discoveries can be hiding just beneath our feet — even under a construction site!
