Sun Sends a Surprise! A Solar Blast Is Heading Toward Earth — and Could Light Up the Sky

What Happened?

This particular sneeze is aimed at Earth. Scientists at NOAA, the U.S. science agency that watches space weather, are tracking it carefully. They expect the cloud to reach our planet on Monday, August 17.

When it arrives, it could create a minor geomagnetic storm — called a G1 storm on the scientist scale. That is the mildest kind of space storm, roughly like a level 1 out of 5. It is not dangerous. But it can do something wonderful.

A geomagnetic storm can cause the northern lights — also called the aurora borealis — to appear. These are dazzling ribbons of green, pink, and purple light that dance across the night sky. Normally, you can only see them from places like Alaska, Canada, or northern Europe. During a storm, they can sometimes be spotted farther south.

Scientists say people in northern parts of the United States and Europe should look up Monday night if they get the chance.

Why Does It Matter?

The Sun and Earth are connected in amazing ways. Even though the Sun is about 93 million miles away — so far that light takes 8 minutes to reach us — a burst from its surface can reach Earth in just 1 to 3 days and paint colors in our sky.

Scientists watch these events very carefully because very powerful CMEs can briefly affect satellite signals and power grids. The good news is that this one is expected to be gentle. Think of it like a small wave at the beach rather than a giant surfing wave.
