Let the Running Begin! Commonwealth Games Athletics Opens in Glasgow Today

Quick Summary

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are in full swing in Scotland! Today, Monday July 27, is Day 5 of the Games โ€” and it is a big one. The track and field athletics programme has officially started today, bringing sprinters, jumpers, and throwers into the spotlight.

What Happened?

The Commonwealth Games are like a mini-Olympics for countries that are part of the Commonwealth โ€” a group of nations that were once connected to Britain. This year, 74 countries and territories are competing in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 through August 2.

The Games use many of the same venues that hosted the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. It is a cozy, exciting version of international sport โ€” smaller than the Olympics, but just as thrilling for the athletes and fans.

Today, the athletics programme kicked off at Scotstoun Stadium. Athletics includes all the running, jumping, and throwing events you see at the Olympics โ€” from the 100-meter sprint to the long jump to the shot put.

As of today, Australia leads the overall medal table with 33 medals. England sits in second place with 18 medals. The host nation, Scotland, is third with four gold medals, thrilling the home crowds. India is also having a strong Games in weightlifting and boxing.

One of the most anticipated events is still to come. Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra of India is set to compete later this week, along with Pakistanโ€™s Arshad Nadeem โ€” both Olympic stars who have thrown the spear over 85 meters. That is almost as long as nine school buses parked end to end!

Why Does It Matter?

The Commonwealth Games give athletes from smaller nations a big stage to shine. Countries like Grenada, Sri Lanka, and Trinidad and Tobago send world-class athletes who do not always get headlines. The Games celebrate the idea that great talent comes from every corner of the planet.

For the city of Glasgow and Scotland, hosting is also a moment of national pride. Scottishfans are cheering on athletes from their home nation while also welcoming competitors from 73 other countries.
