Blast Off! Four Astronauts Race to the Space Station at Record Speed
Quick Summary
Four astronauts launched into space today aboard a SpaceX rocket. Their spacecraft is aiming for the fastest docking at the International Space Station in U.S. history.
What Happened?
At 11:10 in the morning, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket roared off the launch pad in Florida. On board was the Dragon spacecraft, named Grace. Inside Grace were four crew members ready for a six-month adventure in space.
The crew is led by NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins. She is joined by NASA astronaut Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. Together, they make up NASA’s Crew-13 mission.
The trip from Florida to the space station was planned to take just 7 hours and 50 minutes. That would beat the previous record and make it the fastest journey to the ISS by a U.S. spacecraft ever. Think of it like flying from New York to London — but straight up into space, and much, much faster.
Why Does It Matter?
The International Space Station is a giant science lab floating about 250 miles above Earth. A crew already lives there, doing experiments every day. When a new crew arrives, they swap in to keep the station running.
Jessica Watkins is also making history of her own. She becomes the first active NASA astronaut to fly aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule for a second time. That shows how reliable and trusted these spacecraft have become.
Crew-13 will spend about six months on the station before returning home in early 2027. During that time, they will run science experiments, spacewalks, and help keep the station in great shape.
Big Words
- Astronaut — a person trained to travel and work in outer space.
- Crew Dragon — the name of the SpaceX capsule that carries astronauts to and from the space station.
- Docking — when a spacecraft carefully connects to the space station, like snapping two LEGO pieces together.
- Cosmonaut — the Russian word for astronaut; a space traveler from Russia.
- Expedition — a long journey or mission with a specific goal, like living and working on the space station.
Fun Fact
The International Space Station travels at about 17,500 miles per hour. That means it circles the entire Earth once every 90 minutes — so astronauts on board see 16 sunrises and sunsets every single day!
Think About It
If you could spend six months on the space station, what experiment would you want to run — and why?
