Plants Glow — And a New Satellite Just Launched to Catch Them Doing It!

The first spacecraft is called Sentinel-3C. It will circle Earth and study the oceans, land, ice, and atmosphere. It is the third satellite in a team of Earth-watching spacecraft built for the European Union’s Copernicus programme.
The second spacecraft is the real star of the show. It is called FLEX — short for Fluorescence Explorer. FLEX will do something no satellite has ever done before. It will detect the incredibly faint glow that plants produce every time they make food from sunlight.
When plants use sunlight to grow — a process called photosynthesis — they release a tiny amount of that energy as light. The glow is far too weak for human eyes to see. It is invisible, like infrared light from a TV remote. But FLEX carries a super-sensitive camera called FLORIS that can detect it from hundreds of miles up in space.
By mapping this faint plant glow all around the world, scientists can tell which forests and fields are healthy and growing strongly. They can also spot when plants are struggling — from heat, drought, or disease — before the damage even shows up on the ground.
Both satellites separated from the rocket safely. The whole mission, from liftoff to the last satellite deploying, took less than two hours.
Why Does It Matter?
Plants are like the lungs of our planet. They soak up carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe. They also grow the food we eat.
Right now, scientists have big gaps in their understanding of how plants around the world are doing. Climate change — including more droughts and heat waves — can stress forests and crops. But it can be really hard to spot that stress early.
FLEX changes that. By reading the secret glow of plants from space, it can act like a doctor taking an X-ray. It lets scientists check the health of Earth’s vegetation at a global scale — something that was impossible before.
That information will also help scientists understand how much carbon dioxide plants are pulling out of the air each year. That is a key piece of the climate puzzle.
