Scientists Just Found Air Around a Planet That Could Have Life!

What Happened?
A team of astronomers studied a planet called LHS 1140 b. It is a rocky world — made of rock and metal, just like Earth — and it orbits inside its star’s habitable zone. That means it gets just the right amount of heat to possibly have liquid water on its surface.
The scientists used a powerful telescope called the Magellan Clay Telescope in Chile. As the planet crossed in front of its star, the telescope caught something amazing. It detected helium gas leaking out of the planet’s upper atmosphere and drifting into space.
That escaping helium is a clue. It tells scientists the planet has a layer of air wrapped around it — an atmosphere — that has been there for billions of years. A billion years is so long it is hard to imagine: if you counted one number every second, it would take over 31 years just to count to one billion!
The study was published in the top science journal Science, and was led by researcher Collin Cherubim from Harvard University.
Why Does It Matter?
An atmosphere is like a protective blanket for a planet. Without one, liquid water cannot exist on the surface, temperatures swing wildly from boiling hot to freezing cold, and dangerous radiation from space hits the ground directly. In other words, without an atmosphere, life as we know it is almost impossible.
So finding one around a rocky planet in the right zone around its star is thrilling. Scientists have discovered thousands of planets orbiting other stars. But they have never before confirmed that a rocky, habitable-zone planet has an atmosphere — until now.
LHS 1140 b was first spotted ten years ago. Scientists have been curious about it ever since. Now they finally have their answer: it has air. The next step will be to study that air more closely and look for signs of water or other ingredients for life.
