Snap! Astronauts Just Took the First X-Ray Pictures Ever in Space!

While floating in orbit hundreds of miles above Earth, the astronauts used the device to take X-ray images of their own hands, arms, chests, and abdomens — all without any help from doctors on the ground.

The results were published this week in a top medical journal called Radiology. Scientists confirmed that the space X-ray images were good enough to be used to diagnose a real injury, like a broken bone. The quality was nearly as sharp as X-rays taken right here on Earth.

The device even photographed a smartwatch. This showed that the same technology could be used to inspect spacecraft parts for hidden cracks or damage — kind of like using an X-ray to peek inside a wall without taking it apart.

Why Does It Matter?

Right now, if an astronaut on the International Space Station gets hurt, doctors on Earth can talk to them by radio. But there is no way to take a real picture of a bone to see if it is broken. They have to guess.

Future missions to the Moon will take several days to travel. A trip to Mars would take months. Astronauts on those journeys will need to handle medical problems completely on their own.

Having a portable X-ray machine means astronauts could check for broken bones, internal injuries, or even damaged equipment — all by themselves, far from Earth.

Researchers also noted the same technology could be used in remote places on Earth where doctors are hard to reach. Think of a tiny village in the middle of a jungle or a research base in Antarctica.
