A Giant Space Zit Just Woke Up on the Sun — and It Could Paint the Sky Tonight!

What Happened?

M-class flares are in the middle of the solar flare scale — stronger than a campfire pop, but not yet the biggest kind possible.
The sunspot now has what scientists call a “beta-gamma-delta” magnetic pattern. Think of it like a tangled ball of rubber bands twisted together so tightly they could snap. That is the highest level of magnetic complexity a sunspot can have. Scientists say even bigger flares might still be coming.
Along with the flares, a stream of solar wind is flowing from a large hole in the Sun’s outer atmosphere. That stream is arriving at Earth today, July 22. It is causing a minor level of geomagnetic disturbance, which is a kind of ripple in Earth’s magnetic shield.
When that ripple happens, the night sky can light up in beautiful colors. If you live near Seattle, Edinburgh, southern Scandinavia, or Hobart in Tasmania, look up tonight! The northern or southern lights may be visible from those areas.
Why Does It Matter?
The Sun controls a lot more than you might think. Solar flares and blasts of solar wind can affect satellites, radio signals, GPS, and even power grids on Earth. Scientists track sunspots carefully so they can warn people in time.
This event is a great reminder that our Sun is a living, active star. It is always changing. Space agencies like NOAA and NASA watch it every day using special cameras and satellites. Events like this help scientists learn more about how the Sun behaves — which keeps all of us safer.
