New Phone Day! Google Unveils the Pixel 11 Tonight in New York City
Quick Summary
Tonight is a big night for tech fans! Google is hosting its “Made by Google” event in New York City, where it is officially revealing the brand-new Pixel 11 smartphone family. Pre-orders open today, and the phones are expected to hit store shelves around August 20.
What Happened?
Once a year, Google throws a big launch party for its newest gadgets. This year’s event — called “Made by Google 2026” — is happening tonight, Wednesday August 12, at 6 p.m. Eastern Time in New York City. Anyone anywhere in the world can watch it live on YouTube.
Google has been teasing the new phones for weeks with the slogan: “the next generation of Pixel.” And tonight, the curtain comes up.
So what can tech fans expect? Based on confirmed invitations and earlier announcements, Google is expected to reveal four new phones: the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and a folding phone called the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. A foldable phone is one that bends in the middle like a book — the screen on the inside is big like a small tablet, but it folds up small enough to fit in your pocket.
One of the biggest talking points for the new phones is a brand-new chip called the Tensor G6. A chip is the tiny brain of a smartphone — it decides how fast everything runs. The Tensor G6 is built using a 2-nanometer process. To understand how small that is, imagine squeezing more than 500 million tiny switches into a space the size of your fingernail. That kind of power means the phone can run artificial intelligence features — like smart cameras, voice assistants, and translation tools — much faster and more efficiently than before.
Google is also introducing something called “Pixel Glow” — a new ring of light that glows around the camera bar on the back of the phone. It lights up with different colors for notifications, like a mood ring for your phone. It is the first big new design idea on the back of a Pixel in years.
Alongside the phones, Google is expected to announce the Pixel Watch 5 — a new smartwatch — and possibly a small tracking accessory called Pixel Tag, similar to Apple’s AirTag, that helps people find lost items.
The event is hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, and features special appearances from basketball star Stephen Curry, cricketer Shubman Gill, and actress Ayami Nakajo.
Why Does It Matter?
Smartphones are now one of the most used tools on Earth — more people have one than have access to a personal computer. When a major phone company releases a new model, it often introduces ideas that eventually make their way into everyone’s lives: better cameras, smarter voice assistants, longer battery life, and new ways to communicate.
This launch is also happening just a few weeks before Apple is expected to reveal the next iPhone — making August a very exciting month for technology fans around the world.
Big Words
- Processor chip — the tiny, powerful brain inside a computer or phone that carries out instructions and runs programs
- Nanometer — an incredibly tiny unit of measurement. One nanometer is one billionth of a meter — about 100,000 times thinner than a human hair
- Foldable phone — a smartphone with a flexible screen that can fold in half, making it compact when closed and tablet-sized when open
- Artificial intelligence (AI) — computer programs that can learn, recognize patterns, and make decisions — like recognizing your face or translating languages
- Pre-order — when a customer pays for a product before it is officially available in stores
Fun Fact
Google chose to hold this year’s launch eight days earlier on the calendar than last year. One reason? To get a head start before Apple usually reveals the new iPhone in September!
Think About It
If you could add one new feature to a smartphone that doesn’t exist yet, what would it be — and how would it help people?
