A Lost City in the Jungle! Scientists Find a Huge Secret Civilization Hidden in the Amazon

A team of scientists flew a plane over a section of the Amazon in Brazil. The plane carried a tool called LiDAR, which shoots laser beams through the trees. Those lasers bounce off the ground and create a detailed 3D map — like giving the ground an X-ray. What the scientists saw amazed them.
The lasers revealed nearly 400 giant shapes cut into the earth. These shapes included circles, squares, rectangles, and even octagons — all made by human hands. The largest single site covered an area bigger than 120 football fields placed side by side.
The shapes were made by the Aquiry civilization, which lived in this part of the Amazon between about 600 BCE and 850 CE. That means they were building these enormous structures for around 1,500 years!
After carefully studying the survey, scientists estimated that the entire Aquiry territory — which covered an area about the size of the state of North Dakota — could hold between 24,000 and 30,000 of these structures in total. At the peak of the civilization, somewhere between 1.25 million and 3 million people may have called this place home.
Why Does It Matter?
This discovery rewrites history. Scientists now know the Amazon was not a quiet, empty wilderness. It was home to one of the largest ancient civilizations ever found in the Americas.
The Aquiry people were skilled farmers. They grew crops like maize, squash, and manioc. They carefully managed their forests, planting trees they valued and clearing land where they needed it. The forests they shaped are still visible today — over 2,000 years later!
The huge geometric structures were probably used for ceremonies and celebrations, not as homes. Think of them like enormous outdoor temples or festival grounds.
The Aquiry civilization disappeared around 850 CE — the same time the Maya civilization in Central America was also collapsing. Scientists are still working to understand why. They also do not yet know what language the Aquiry spoke, or what they called themselves. The name “Aquiry” comes from an Indigenous word meaning “river of caimans” — a nod to the local Acre River.
This find shows that there are still enormous secrets waiting inside Earth’s rainforests.
