A Hole in Space! Hubble Photographs a Giant Cosmic Bubble 160,000 Light-Years Away

What Happened?
Hubble is one of the most powerful space telescopes ever built. It floats above Earth and photographs the universe in stunning detail. Its newest image shows a nebula called N44, and it is spectacular.
A nebula is a huge cloud of gas and dust floating in space. N44 sits inside the Large Magellanic Cloud, a smaller galaxy that orbits our own Milky Way galaxy. It’s about 160,000 light-years away from Earth. That is so far that if you could ride a beam of light, you’d still need 160,000 years to get there!
At the center of N44 is something wild: a gigantic empty space shaped like an oval. Scientists call it a superbubble. It measures about 210 light-years long and 140 light-years wide. One light-year is nearly 6 trillion miles, so this bubble is almost impossibly large. You could fit the distance between our Sun and Pluto into it about 1.4 million times.
How did this giant hole get there? Stars. Massive, hot stars in the center of the nebula are incredibly powerful. Their fierce winds — streams of particles blasting outward — and their giant explosions (called supernovae) pushed all the surrounding gas away over millions of years. That left behind the enormous empty bubble.
All that pushed-away gas didn’t disappear. It formed a thick, glowing shell around the outside of the bubble. And new stars are forming in that shell right now! The Hubble team catalogued nearly half a million stars in and around N44, including about 30,000 baby stars that haven’t started shining yet.
Why Does It Matter?
Images like this help scientists understand how stars are born, live, and die. When stars explode, they push gas away — and that same gas later becomes new stars. It’s a cycle, like nature’s way of recycling in space.
Hubble has been capturing photos like this for over 35 years. Every new image teaches us something about our place in the universe.
