A Hidden Clue Unlocks the Age of Ice Age Cave Art!

What Happened?

Deep inside a cave in southern France, ancient people painted stunning pictures of bison, horses, and masks on rocky walls. The cave, called Font-de-Gaume, sits in the Dordogne region and holds more than 200 colorful prehistoric paintings.

Scientists discovered the cave back in 1901. For over 120 years, no one could figure out exactly when the pictures were made. Experts could only guess by looking at the style of the drawings — a bit like guessing when a book was written by its font instead of its publication date.

Then, a team of researchers led by scientist Ina Reiche made a surprising discovery. For ages, everyone assumed the black paint was made only from minerals — things like iron and manganese. Minerals cannot be used for radiocarbon dating, so the paintings seemed impossible to date directly.

But Reiche’s team used special light-based scanning tools to look more closely at the paint without touching it. They discovered something nobody expected: hidden inside the black pigment were tiny traces of charcoal. Charcoal is made from burned wood, and wood contains carbon. That means it can be dated!

With permission from French heritage authorities, the team took tiny, nearly invisible samples — smaller than a grain of salt — from two paintings: a bison and a mask-like figure. They used a super-precise technique called accelerator mass spectrometry to measure the carbon in those samples.

The results showed that the bison was painted about 13,000 years ago. Parts of the mask figure were painted at several different times — the oldest section dates back about 16,000 years.

Why Does It Matter?

Think about how long 13,000 years really is. If every year of human history were one step, you’d have to take 13,000 steps — more than five miles — to reach the people who painted that bison. They lived during the last Ice Age, when woolly mammoths still roamed Earth.

This discovery opens a door to dating hundreds more prehistoric cave paintings across France and beyond. Scientists suspect that other caves in the region may also have hidden charcoal in their pigments, making them newly dateable too.

Before this breakthrough, researchers had to guess the age of Dordogne cave art by comparing painting styles. Now they have a direct, scientific answer for the first time ever. That changes everything about how we study Ice Age people and their art.
