India Makes Space History! Its First Private Rocket Reaches Orbit

What Happened?
Early this morning, a rocket named Vikram-1 launched from a place called Sriharikota, a barrier island on the southeastern coast of India. The launch had a short pause of about 35 minutes because computers detected a small navigation issue. But engineers fixed the problem, and the rocket roared off the pad.
The rocket is built by a company called Skyroot Aerospace, based in the city of Hyderabad. The mission is named “Mission Aagaman,” which means “arrival” in Hindi. True to its name, the rocket arrived in orbit right on schedule.
Vikram-1 carried five special science experiments into space. One of them is a robotic arm that could one day help clean up old, broken satellites floating around Earth — like a giant space trash-grabber. The rocket also carried a postcard from India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a piece of artwork called “Cosmic Bloom.”
After liftoff, the rocket separated its payloads in space exactly as planned. Prime Minister Modi called Skyroot Aerospace to congratulate the team.
Why Does It Matter?
Before today, only governments — not private companies — had ever launched an orbital rocket from India. This changes everything. Now that a private company has done it, more Indian companies may build their own rockets too.
Think of it like this: for a long time, only big government post offices could deliver mail across the country. Then private delivery companies came along, and suddenly packages moved faster and to more places. Private rockets could do the same thing for space.
Skyroot made India only the third country in the world to have a private company successfully launch an orbital rocket. The other two are the United States and New Zealand. That is an amazing club to join!
The Vikram-1 rocket is about as tall as a seven-story building. It can carry roughly 770 pounds of cargo to space — about the weight of a grand piano — and it uses 3D-printed engines, which are faster and cheaper to make than traditional ones.
