Showdown Day! Soccer’s Leagues Cup Crowns Its Final 8 Tonight

Quick Summary

Today is one of the biggest days in North American club soccer. It is the last matchday of Leagues Cup Phase One. Six matches are being played today, and by the end of the night, eight teams will have earned spots in the knockout rounds. The stakes could not be higher!

What Happened?

The Leagues Cup is a special tournament where teams from two of North America’s top soccer leagues go head to head. Major League Soccer (MLS) sends its best 18 clubs. Liga MX — Mexico’s top league — sends all 18 of its clubs. That makes 36 teams total, from three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The tournament started August 4. For the past ten days, all 36 teams have been playing a “Phase One” league stage. Each team played three matches, always against a team from the opposite league. Think of it like a round-robin spelling bee — everyone competes, but only the top four finishers from each league move on.

Today, August 13, is the last day of Phase One. Six big matches are happening. Everything is still up for grabs, and the tension is incredible.

One of the most exciting matchups tonight is Austin FC against Club América. Austin is an MLS team from Texas that has been on fire — they are undefeated so far and have not allowed a single goal yet. Their goalkeeper, Brad Stuver, has been a wall. But Club América, one of Mexico’s most famous clubs, is also undefeated. Both teams want the top spot badly.

The tournament has a cool twist this year. For the first time ever, some games are being played in Mexico. That had never happened in any previous edition of the Leagues Cup.

Once the eight qualified teams are decided, the knockout rounds begin on August 25–27. Every knockout match is winner-take-all — if it is tied after 90 minutes, it goes straight to a penalty shootout with no extra time. The final is on September 6.

Why Does It Matter?

This is more than just a trophy. The top three teams in the whole tournament earn a spot in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup — the biggest club competition in the Americas. That is like finishing in the top three at a school math competition and earning a ticket to the national championship.

MLS clubs have won every edition of the Leagues Cup since it was relaunched in 2023. Last year, the Seattle Sounders beat Inter Miami 3–0 in front of nearly 70,000 fans. Can an MLS team win again — or will a Liga MX club break the streak?

Big Words

  • MLS — Major League Soccer; the top professional soccer league in the United States and Canada.
  • Liga MX — the top professional soccer league in Mexico.
  • Phase One — the opening round of the Leagues Cup where teams play against opponents from the other league to earn points.
  • Knockout stage — the part of a tournament where losing a single game means you are eliminated; also called single-elimination.
  • CONCACAF Champions Cup — a major soccer tournament for the best clubs in North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Fun Fact

The Leagues Cup trophy is called “El Trofeo.” MLS clubs have claimed it every single year since the big tournament launched in 2023. Liga MX teams are determined to end that streak this year!

Think About It

In the Leagues Cup, teams from two different countries and two different leagues compete against each other. Do you think mixing leagues from different countries makes tournaments more exciting? What would be a dream matchup you would want to see?
