A Golden Birthday! Indian Boxer Lovlina Wins Asian Games Gold on Her Special Day

Quick Summary

Today at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain won gold — and it happened to be her 29th birthday! She defeated China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the women’s 75kg boxing final. It is a historic moment for Indian women in sports.

What Happened?

The Asian Games — Asia’s biggest multi-sport event — is in its final days in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. October 2 is the single biggest day of the whole Games, with 51 gold medals being decided today alone.

One of the most exciting moments came from the boxing arena at Nishio Gymnasium. Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain stepped into the ring for the women’s 75kg final against China’s Bao Ziyi, one of Asia’s top fighters. What happened next was incredible.

Lovlina stayed calm and clever throughout all three rounds. She let her opponent come forward and then countered with sharp, well-timed punches. By the end, all five judges agreed: Lovlina won by a clean 5-0 score — a unanimous decision, which means every single judge picked her as the winner.

That would already be a great story. But here is what made it even more special: October 2 is also Lovlina’s birthday. She turned 29 years old today — and celebrated by standing on top of the podium with a gold medal around her neck.

With this victory, Lovlina became only the second Indian woman boxer in history to win gold at the Asian Games. The first was the legendary Mary Kom, who won gold back in 2014. Lovlina herself had come close before — she won silver at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This time, she went one step further.

Lovlina’s path to boxing started in a small village in the state of Assam, in northeastern India. She also won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and became World Champion in 2023. Today’s gold adds another shining moment to an already remarkable career.

India has been having a great Games overall. Today also saw India win gold in women’s recurve archery for the very first time ever, in another history-making result.

Why Does It Matter?

Winning a gold medal at the Asian Games takes years of hard work, early mornings, and a lot of courage. Lovlina’s story shows that determination and patience pay off. She came so close before — and kept going. Her victory inspires young people all across India and beyond to chase their dreams, even when it takes extra time to reach them.

  • Asian Games — a multi-sport event held every four years where athletes from all across Asia compete; it is like the Olympics, but just for Asia
  • Gold medal — the prize given to the athlete who finishes first and wins their event at a major competition
  • Counter-punching — a boxing strategy where a fighter waits for their opponent to attack first, then strikes back with their own punch

Fun Fact

Lovlina Borgohain grew up in Barmukhia, a tiny village in Assam, India. Her two older sisters were also competitive athletes — they inspired her to start training. Sometimes the best coaches are the people right at home!
