Gum-Gum Beetle! Scientists Name a Stretchy New Bug After One Piece’s Luffy

What Happened?
Researchers at the Natural History Museum of Denmark found two new species of beetles hiding in forests in Asia. One was found in the forests of Yunnan Province in China. The other turned up in the jungles of northern Laos.
Both beetles belong to a group called rove beetles — small insects known for their short wing covers. But these two are very unusual. Their antennae, mandibles (jaw parts), and mouthparts are extremely long and slender compared to other beetles. Imagine if your arms were as long as your whole body. That is how extreme this looks in beetle terms.
When the scientists looked at them, they immediately thought of Monkey D. Luffy, the hero of the manga and anime One Piece. Luffy has a rubber body. He can stretch his arms, legs, and neck incredibly far. These beetles looked just like that — all stretched out.
So the scientists named the new genus Luffy. The two species got their own names too. One is called Luffy schillhammeri, named after a beetle expert in Austria. The other is called Luffy nika, named after Luffy’s powerful Gear 5 “Nika” transformation from the show.
The research was published in a scientific journal called ZooKeys.
