Happy Moon Day! Humans First Walked on the Moon 57 Years Ago Today — and a Giant Rocket Is Ready to Fly Tonight

What Happened?
On July 20, 1969, three American astronauts made history. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon. A third crew member, Michael Collins, waited in orbit above them. Armstrong was the first person ever to walk on the Moon’s surface. Aldrin soon followed him outside.
The two men spent more than two hours exploring. They collected 47.5 pounds of Moon rocks to bring back to Earth. Millions of people around the world watched it happen live on television. NASA has called the Moon landing one of the greatest technological achievements in human history.
Fast forward to today — July 20, 2026. Space exploration has come a very long way! Tonight, SpaceX is targeting a launch window starting at 6:45 p.m. Eastern Time for Starship Flight 13. Starship is the world’s largest and most powerful rocket ever built. It stands more than 400 feet tall — that’s about as tall as a 40-story skyscraper.
This will be Starship’s 13th test flight overall and only its second flight of 2026. SpaceX tried to launch it on July 16, but four of its 33 powerful engines failed to ignite at the last second, and computers safely stopped the launch. Engineers replaced two of those engines and have been preparing for tonight’s new attempt.
If it launches, Starship will carry 20 next-generation Starlink internet satellites into space for the very first time. Six of those satellites carry special cameras pointing back at the rocket to take pictures of its heat shield — like a selfie camera for a rocket! The booster will attempt a splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico after separation.
Why Does It Matter?
The Moon landing of 1969 showed that people can do things that seem completely impossible — if they work hard enough and dare to dream big. It inspired generations of scientists, engineers, and astronauts.
Tonight’s Starship launch matters for the future. NASA wants to use Starship to carry astronauts back to the Moon in the coming years. SpaceX eventually hopes to use it to send people all the way to Mars. Every test flight teaches engineers something new about making the rocket safer and more reliable.
Flight 13 has a special extra mission. Some of the Starlink satellites onboard carry cameras to photograph Starship’s heat shield from the outside during flight. That inspection trick has never been tried before and will help engineers keep future crews safe.
