Full Throttle at Silverstone! MotoGP’s British Grand Prix Weekend Is Here

Quick Summary

The world’s fastest motorcycle racers are back! The MotoGP British Grand Prix is underway at Silverstone, one of the most famous racing circuits in the world. Marco Bezzecchi set a blazing fast practice time — and today’s Sprint Race could shake up the championship standings.

What Happened?

After a summer break, MotoGP returned to the legendary Silverstone circuit in England this weekend for Round 12 of the 2026 season. And it started with fireworks.

On Friday, rider Marco Bezzecchi — who rides for the Aprilia team — set a stunning practice lap time of 1 minute and 56.280 seconds. That was almost a full second faster than the previous lap record at Silverstone! Imagine running a race and finishing nearly a whole second ahead of the fastest time anyone has ever run — that is a massive improvement in racing.

Bezzecchi’s return was especially exciting because he had been away for several weeks with a broken collarbone. He came back and immediately looked faster than anyone else on track.

The championship battle going into Silverstone was very tight. Jorge Martín — also riding for Aprilia — leads the points standings by just 14 points from teammate Ai Ogura, with reigning champion Marc Márquez only 18 points back. In racing, 14 points is like being just one or two places apart in a race — it can change in an instant.

Today, Saturday August 8, the riders are competing in qualifying to set the starting grid — and then a 10-lap Sprint Race. This shorter race gives points but also gives teams a chance to test tyre strategy before the full 20-lap Grand Prix on Sunday.

Note: The Sprint Race is scheduled for 4pm local time today. Full results will be available later today.

Why Does It Matter?

MotoGP is the top level of motorcycle racing in the world. The bikes reach speeds of over 220 miles per hour — faster than a cheetah is long in a second! Silverstone is one of the most historic tracks on the calendar, and the British GP always draws huge crowds.

With only a handful of races left in the season, every point matters enormously. A win at Silverstone could change who leads the championship — and who has the best chance of becoming the 2026 MotoGP world champion.

Big Words

  • MotoGP — the top class of motorcycle racing in the world, where the fastest and most powerful bikes compete
  • Lap record — the fastest time any rider has ever completed one full loop of a racing circuit
  • Sprint Race — a shorter, half-distance race held on Saturdays in MotoGP that awards half the points of the main Grand Prix
  • Championship standings — the points table that shows which rider is winning the season-long title race
  • Qualifying — a session where riders race the clock to set the fastest single lap and earn their position on the starting grid

Fun Fact

Silverstone was built on a World War II airfield! The long, wide runways that once launched fighter planes are now part of the circuit’s famous fast and sweeping corners.

Think About It

MotoGP riders lean their bikes so far into corners that their knees sometimes scrape the ground. Why do you think leaning helps a motorcycle turn faster?
