Get Ready! NASA’s Newest Space Telescope Fueled Up and Almost Ready to Fly

What Happened?

Today, July 29, NASA held a live news conference to tell the world what to expect from this exciting mission. The telescope will launch on August 30 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, riding on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
After launch, the telescope will travel to a special spot in space called Lagrange Point 2. That location is about one million miles from Earth — roughly four times farther away than the Moon. There, it will have a perfectly stable home for doing science.
The Roman Space Telescope is named after Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, the first woman to hold a top leadership job at NASA. She helped make the Hubble Space Telescope possible, so she is sometimes called the “Mother of Hubble.”
Why Does It Matter?
Roman is no ordinary telescope. Its camera covers a patch of sky at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s. Imagine Hubble as a flashlight with a tiny, narrow beam. Roman is like flipping on a giant floodlight — it can photograph a huge area all at once.
That incredible view means Roman could spot light from up to one billion galaxies over its lifetime. Scientists hope it will help them discover thousands of new planets around other stars, learn more about mysterious dark energy, and unlock secrets about how the universe grew and changed over billions of years.
Roman will share its orbit with the James Webb Space Telescope. Think of James Webb as a super-powered zoom lens, looking very deep into tiny patches of sky. Roman is the wide-angle camera that surveys enormous stretches of the cosmos. Together, they make an amazing team.
Science operations are expected to begin in early 2027, after about 90 days of testing and setup in space.
