Roar! Nepal’s Wild Tigers Have Nearly Quadrupled in Just 16 Years!

So Nepal made a plan. The country hired more park rangers to stop poaching — the illegal hunting of animals. It expanded protected forests. Scientists helped deer and wild boar populations recover, giving tigers more food. And most importantly, local communities who live near tiger country became partners in protecting the big cats.

The plan worked beyond anyone’s hopes. The numbers climbed — 198 tigers in 2013, then 235, then 355, and now 429. Nepal’s tiger count has nearly quadrupled in sixteen years.

Nepal is now one of the top countries in the world for wild tigers. Its count of 429 puts it ahead of Indonesia. Only India and Russia have more wild tigers.

Globally, great news too. The worldwide wild tiger population has grown from about 3,200 in 2010 to over 5,500 today.

Why Does It Matter?

Tigers are what scientists call a “keystone species.” They sit at the top of the food chain. When tigers are healthy and plentiful, the whole forest tends to be healthy too. More tigers mean more balanced ecosystems — which helps everything from deer to birds to fish in the rivers.

Nepal’s story also shows that conservation can work. It takes time, hard work, and communities willing to share their land with wild animals. Scientists say Nepal’s success is a model for other countries to follow.

There are still challenges. Nepal’s forests are now estimated to hold about as many tigers as they can comfortably support. Finding space for even more tigers will mean careful planning. But that is a remarkable kind of problem to have.
