Will It Keep Flying? The Fate of NASA’s Farthest-Ever Spacecraft Is in Question

What Happened?

But here is the concern. A proposed U.S. government budget would cut NASA’s science funding by nearly half. That plan calls for ending the New Horizons mission entirely. Scientists at Universe Today reported this morning that the part of New Horizons’ mission that studies the solar wind and charged particles from the Sun could be shut off as early as October.
New Horizons carries two special instruments that measure particles flowing from the Sun all the way out to the edge of the solar system. No other spacecraft can do this from where New Horizons sits. If the funding ends, this unique window into the outer solar system would close — possibly for a generation.
Congress still has to decide on the final budget. Scientists and space fans around the world are speaking up to keep the mission going.
Why Does It Matter?
New Horizons is one of the most adventurous spacecraft ever built. It took over 20 years of travel to reach its current location. Shutting it down now — when it is healthy and producing new science — would mean losing data that simply cannot be collected any other way.
The Planetary Society, which advocates for space exploration, says that if the mission is canceled, it could take an entire generation before we can restore what is lost.
