Hungry Little Helper! Scientists Found a Soil Microbe That Chomps Plastic AND Medicine

Hidden inside that data was a gene for a very unusual enzyme. An enzyme is a tiny molecular machine that speeds up chemical reactions. Think of it like a key that unlocks a lock. This key, however, can open two completely different locks.

The enzyme has a very wide, open shape — almost like the mouth of Pac-Man, the video game character who chomps everything in his path. It can grab onto long plastic chains and pull them apart. But it can also grab onto penicillin, a famous antibiotic medicine, and break that apart too.

The scientists named it LCPH1. They called it the “Pac-Man enzyme” because of that distinctive chomping shape.

Why Does It Matter?

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental challenges in the world. Millions of tonnes of plastic end up in soil and oceans every year. Most regular plastic barely breaks down for hundreds of years. Finding natural tools — like enzymes already living in soil — could one day help us clean up plastic faster.

The discovery also raises an important question. If this enzyme can destroy penicillin, could it affect how antibiotics work in the soil? Scientists want to study that carefully. Discoveries like this take years of more research before anyone knows how to use them. But every great invention starts with finding something surprising in nature.
