Pluto Is Alive! Scientists Find Liquid Flowing on the Frozen Dwarf Planet

The research team, led by scientists at the Southwest Research Institute, studied photos taken by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft during its famous 2015 flyby of Pluto. They noticed dark streaks and patches along the glacier. Those dark marks look a lot like places that have been wetted by a liquid.

Could it be rain? No. Pluto is far too cold and its air is far too thin for rain to fall. So the liquid must be coming from underground.

Computer models back up the idea. They show that nitrogen ice deep under the glacier could melt from the pressure and heat below. Then it could travel upward through tiny tunnels — a bit like how lava moves through tubes under a volcano — and reach the surface.

Once on the surface, the liquid nitrogen can flow downhill before it quickly turns back into solid ice.

Why Does It Matter?

For a long time, scientists thought Pluto was just a cold, dead rock floating in space. This discovery changes that picture completely.

It suggests Pluto is much more geologically active than anyone expected. Even at the very edge of our solar system, something interesting is happening beneath the ice.

This also helps scientists understand how materials behave in extreme environments — knowledge that could be useful when exploring other icy worlds, like some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.
