The Snake’s Secret! Scientists Find a Hidden Medicine Inside Rattlesnake Blood

In laboratory tests, these protein mixtures were about 10 times more powerful than the antivenom doctors currently use. Today’s antivenom is usually made by injecting venom into sheep and collecting the antibodies the sheep makes. It can cause side effects and doesn’t always work perfectly.

The rattlesnake proteins worked against venom from several different snake species — not just rattlesnakes. That’s a huge bonus, because snakebites from different types of snakes can be hard to treat with one medicine.

These proteins are not a medicine you can buy yet. Scientists need to do more testing before it’s safe for people. But Professor Sean Carroll, who led the research, says he believes nature-based antivenoms like this could arrive within the next several years. Veterinary (animal) uses may come first.

Why Does It Matter?

Snakebites are a serious global problem. Hundreds of thousands of people are bitten by venomous snakes every year, especially in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. Better, more affordable antivenom could save many lives.
