A Robot Mechanic for Satellites! The World’s Coolest Space Repairman Launches Today

What Happened?
Imagine you have a very expensive toy car. It still works perfectly — but it has run out of batteries, and you cannot replace them. You would have to throw the whole car away.
That is a problem satellites face in space. Many satellites that orbit high above Earth are still in great condition, but when they run out of fuel, they become useless and must be retired. That wastes enormous amounts of money and resources.
Today, a rocket called a SpaceX Falcon 9 is launching from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, carrying a very special spacecraft: the Mission Robotic Vehicle, or MRV for short. The launch window opens at 5:15 p.m. Eastern Time.
The MRV is roughly the size of a moving van and weighs about as much as a small car. It has two robotic arms, developed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, that can reach out and grab satellites.
Here is how it works. When a satellite in orbit is running low on fuel, the MRV carefully flies up to it. Then it attaches a small robotic “jetpack” — called a Mission Extension Pod — onto the satellite. That jetpack gives the satellite years of extra life. Each pod can extend a satellite’s life by up to eight years!
The MRV is launching with three of these jetpacks onboard. All three are already promised to specific customer satellites, including some owned by Intelsat and Optus. The MRV itself is designed to attach up to 30 pods to satellites over its entire lifetime.
This marks a historic moment: it is the first time a U.S. commercial robotic spacecraft with arm capability will operate in geosynchronous orbit — a region about 22,500 miles above Earth where hundreds of satellites provide TV, internet, weather data, and military communications to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

Satellites are incredibly important to modern life. They help with weather forecasting, GPS navigation, internet connections, and much more.
Being able to repair and refuel them in space — instead of launching expensive replacements — will save huge amounts of money. It also helps reduce space junk by keeping working satellites in service longer.
The MRV could also be used in the future to inspect or repair satellites that have malfunctioned, making it one of the most useful tools ever sent to orbit.

Fun Fact
Satellite servicing is not a totally new idea. Back in 1984, the Space Shuttle astronauts repaired the Solar Max satellite in orbit — but that required human astronauts to float out and do the work in spacesuits! The MRV does it all with robots and no humans aboard.
