One Month to Go! NASA’s Powerful New Space Telescope Is Almost Ready to Fly

What Happened?

Liftoff is set for no earlier than Sunday, August 30, at 7:26 a.m. Eastern Time.
The Roman Space Telescope is named after Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, a real trailblazer. She was the first woman to hold an executive position at NASA, and she fought hard for the Hubble Space Telescope to be built. Without Dr. Roman, Hubble might never have happened!
Once it launches, Roman will travel about one million miles from Earth to a special spot in space called Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2, or L2. That’s about four times farther away than the Moon. It’s a perfect parking spot for telescopes because the gravity from the Sun and Earth balance perfectly there, letting the telescope stay put without using lots of fuel.
Here’s the coolest part: Roman has a camera so wide it can photograph a patch of sky 100 times bigger than Hubble can in a single shot. If Hubble is like looking through a keyhole, Roman is like opening a whole wall of windows at once. Scientists plan to use it to study mysterious dark energy, search for planets around other stars, and map billions of galaxies.
And it’s launching eight months ahead of schedule — NASA is just that excited to get it up there!
