Crash Landing on the Moon! A Rocket Hits the Lunar Surface Today

What Happened?

Normally, a used upper stage falls back to Earth and burns up in the atmosphere. But this one had traveled too high and too fast. It had no fuel left to steer itself home. It was stuck drifting through space.

Over the next 18 months, the gentle pull of Earth, the Moon, and the Sun slowly guided it onto a new path — like a slow-motion game of cosmic billiards. That path ended at the Moon.

Today, August 5, at about 6:35 in the morning (UTC — that is like 1:35 a.m. on the East Coast of the United States), the rocket crashed near a spot on the Moon called Einstein Crater. It hit at about 5,400 miles per hour. That is seven times faster than the speed of sound!

To picture how fast that is: a commercial airplane cruises at around 575 miles per hour. This rocket hit the Moon nearly ten times faster than that.

The rocket itself was about as long as a four-story building and weighed roughly as much as four small cars. Because it was hollow inside — like a giant empty can — scientists expected it to crush when it hit rather than punch deep into the ground.

The crash is expected to blast a new crater into the lunar surface. Scientists estimate the crater could be as wide as a basketball court — about 66 to 98 feet across.

Why Does It Matter?

The Moon has no weather, no wind, and no rain. Nothing erodes its surface. When something hits the Moon, the crater stays there forever. Scientists can study it for years.

But the most exciting part is what happens right after the impact. The crash sends a huge cloud of Moon dust — called a plume — shooting up above the surface. That plume could rise as high as 62 miles above the Moon. That is nearly as high as the International Space Station orbits above Earth!

Scientists are studying that dust cloud to learn what the Moon is made of deep underground. They are also testing new ways to track exactly where objects hit the Moon. That will help future astronauts and lunar bases stay safe.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft — a camera-carrying robot that circles the Moon — will photograph the crash site before and after the impact. Those “before and after” pictures will show scientists exactly how much the Moon’s surface changed.

This event is also sparking a big conversation about space junk. As more and more missions head to the Moon, engineers want to make sure spent rocket parts do not cause problems. SpaceX and NASA are already talking about better plans for the future.
