The World’s Biggest Rocket Is Ready to Fly — and It’s Carrying Something New!

What Happened?

SpaceX has been testing Starship for years. It is the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. Today, its 13th test flight is scheduled to lift off from Starbase, Texas, at 6:45 p.m. Eastern time.

This flight is special for a big reason. Starship is carrying 20 brand-new Starlink Version 3 — or “V3” — satellites. These are the upgraded internet satellites that SpaceX wants to send up by the thousands. They are too large and heavy for SpaceX’s smaller Falcon 9 rocket to launch in big batches. Only Starship is big enough to do that job.

The 20 satellites will pop open their solar panels and antennas while in space. They will even try to connect to a ground station in South Africa and beam signals to other Starlink satellites using laser links. The whole test will last only a few minutes, because Starship is flying on a curved path — called a suborbital path — that brings it back down quickly. After the test, the satellites will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up. They are not meant to stay in orbit yet. This time, they are just proving the idea works.

Six of the 20 satellites have cameras attached. Their job is to take photos of Starship’s heat shield — the protective tiles covering the bottom of the rocket. Engineers want to see how the tiles hold up during re-entry. Think of the heat shield like the bottom of a frying pan. It gets incredibly hot so the inside of the rocket stays safe.

Meanwhile, the giant booster — the bottom part of the rocket — will fly back and try to land softly in the Gulf of Mexico. The last flight had a problem with that landing. Engineers have made fixes and are ready to try again.

This mission follows a nearly two-month pause. After Flight 12 in May, the Federal Aviation Administration — the government agency that watches over aviation and rocket safety — asked SpaceX to investigate what went wrong. On July 13, the FAA closed the investigation and gave SpaceX the green light to fly again.

Why Does It Matter?

Starship is the rocket that NASA plans to use as a lunar lander for its Artemis missions. One day, it may carry astronauts to the Moon — and eventually to Mars.

But before any of that can happen, Starship has to prove it can do ordinary jobs reliably. Launching internet satellites is exactly that kind of everyday job. If today’s flight works, it brings SpaceX one giant step closer to using Starship as a regular workhorse in space.

SpaceX eventually wants to launch perhaps 100,000 of the upgraded V3 satellites. That would give faster internet to people all over the world, including remote areas with no cables or towers. Every successful Starship test flight makes that dream more realistic.

Fun Fact

Starship is so tall that if you stood it next to the Statue of Liberty (305 feet tall), Starship — at about 400 feet — would tower nearly 100 feet above Lady Liberty’s torch!
