Lucky 13! Starship Blasts Off and Delivers Real Satellites to Space

What Happened?
On the evening of July 24, SpaceX launched Starship Flight 13 from its Starbase site in Texas. This rocket is the tallest ever built — taller than a 40-story skyscraper. It’s powered by 33 engines that all fired perfectly at liftoff.
This mission was extra special because Starship carried real satellites for the very first time. Twenty next-generation Starlink V3 satellites were tucked inside the rocket like eggs in a carton. Once in space, they popped out, unfolded their solar panels, and briefly connected to SpaceX’s internet network using lasers. Think of it like a test drive for a brand-new car — everything had to work before the fleet can grow.
Six of the satellites had cameras on board. Their job? To take photos of Starship’s heat shield — the protective layer that keeps the rocket from burning up when it falls back toward Earth. The photos will help engineers know if the shield is in good shape for future missions.
After the satellites were released, they re-entered the atmosphere and burned up safely — just as planned. The data they gathered on the way down will help SpaceX build even better satellites next time.
Both parts of the rocket made it back safely too. The bottom part, called Super Heavy, splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico. The top part, called Ship, glided all the way to the Indian Ocean — on the other side of the world — and splashed down there. SpaceX called it the “softest splashdown” yet.
Why Does It Matter?
Starship is the rocket that NASA plans to use to land astronauts on the Moon. Each test flight teaches engineers something new. Flight 13 checked off nearly every goal on its list. The heat shield worked well, real satellites were deployed for the first time, and both rocket stages came home safely.
With each flight, SpaceX gets closer to using Starship for real missions. One day, this same design could carry people to the Moon and even to Mars.
