Triple Trouble! Astronomers Spot Three Giant Black Holes Crammed Into One Galaxy

A team of astronomers led by the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany made the find using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). They published their research in the science journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Hereโ€™s something mind-bending: this galaxy is 12.5 billion light-years away from Earth. A light-year is how far light travels in a full year. Light moves so fast it could circle the entire Earth more than 7 times in one single second. So 12.5 billion light-years is an almost unimaginably huge distance.

It also means that when scientists look at this galaxy, theyโ€™re seeing it as it looked 12.5 billion years ago โ€” back when the universe was very young, less than 1.3 billion years old. Itโ€™s like getting a photograph of what the universe looked like when it was a baby!

Two of the three black holes are crammed close together at the center of the galaxy. A third one sits farther out, near the galaxyโ€™s edge. Scientists think all three may slowly spiral toward each other and eventually merge into one enormous black hole โ€” though that process would take an incredibly long time.

Why Does It Matter?

One of the biggest mysteries in astronomy is how supermassive black holes got so enormous so fast in the early universe. This discovery gives scientists an important clue: black holes may have grown large by merging with each other.

Think of it like this โ€” if you want to make a really big snowball fast, the quickest way is to roll several smaller snowballs together. Scientists now believe ancient black holes may have done the same thing: merging and merging until they became the giants we see today.

This finding, the first of its kind, opens a whole new chapter in our understanding of how galaxies and black holes grew together in the early universe.
