Surprise! This Monster Volcano Accidentally Cleaned Up Its Own Pollution

What Happened?
In January 2022, an underwater volcano called Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai erupted in the South Pacific Ocean. It was one of the biggest volcanic explosions ever recorded. The blast shot a column of ash and steam more than 30 kilometers (about 19 miles) straight up — higher than any commercial airplane flies.
Volcanoes release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists expected to find a lot of methane in the enormous cloud left behind by the eruption.
Instead, they spotted something they had never seen before. Using satellites, scientists found huge amounts of a chemical called formaldehyde in the volcano’s plume. That was an important clue. Formaldehyde forms briefly when methane gets destroyed. Seeing so much formaldehyde meant the methane was being broken down.
How? The volcano blasted enormous quantities of salty seawater high into the sky along with its ash. Scientists believe sunlight hitting that salty, ashy mixture created tiny, highly reactive particles of chlorine. Those chlorine particles then attacked the methane in the plume and broke it apart.
Satellites tracked this process for more than 10 days. The formaldehyde cloud stretched all the way from Tonga to South America — a distance of more than 6,000 miles!
The study was published in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
Why Does It Matter?
Methane is a major problem for Earth’s climate. Over 20 years, it traps about 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide. Cutting methane levels is one of the fastest ways to slow near-term warming.
Scientists are excited because this discovery shows that a natural chemical reaction — accidental as it was — could be the blueprint for a future technology. If humans could safely recreate this process, it might offer a new tool for removing methane from the atmosphere.
Researchers are not saying we should set off volcanoes! But understanding how the chemistry worked could inspire clever solutions.
