The Universe Is Running Out of Baby Stars — But Nobody Knows Why!

What Happened?

Think of a star factory. To make a new star, the factory needs lots of hydrogen gas. That gas clumps together under gravity, squeezes tighter and tighter, and — pop! — a new star is born.

For billions of years, the universe was a very busy factory. But scientists have known for a while that it is slowing way down. Over the last 4.5 billion years, the universe’s star-birth rate has dropped by more than half. That’s like a bakery going from baking 100 loaves of bread a day to fewer than 40 — and still having a full pantry of flour.

That is exactly what a new study found. An international team of scientists used two of the most powerful tools in astronomy. One is China’s FAST telescope — the biggest radio telescope on Earth, so wide it could hold 30 football fields inside it. The other is an American project called DESI, which mapped nearly 2.5 million galaxies across almost one-third of the sky.

The researchers measured how much hydrogen gas exists in the universe today compared with 4.5 billion years ago. Here is the big surprise: the hydrogen supply has barely changed. It dropped only a tiny bit — nothing close to the huge drop in star formation.

So the factory still has almost as much flour as before. It is just not baking nearly as many loaves. Something is stopping the hydrogen from turning into stars. Scientists think part of the answer may be that the hydrogen is not getting squeezed into the denser form it needs to be before stars can form. But the full explanation is still a mystery.

The study was published in the science journal Nature Astronomy.

Why Does It Matter?

Stars are the engines of the universe. They create the light, heat, and even the elements — like carbon and oxygen — that make planets and life possible. Understanding why the universe is making fewer stars helps scientists predict the far future of galaxies, including our own Milky Way.

New telescopes, including the Square Kilometre Array being built in South Africa and Australia, may one day answer this question.
