A Planet Was Hiding in Plain Sight — And a Space Telescope Found It by Smell!

What Happened?

About 63 light-years from Earth — that is roughly 370 trillion miles away — there is a young star called Beta Pictoris. Astronomers have studied it for years and already knew about two giant planets orbiting it. They call them Beta Pictoris b and c.

A team of scientists pointed the Webb telescope at this system to study the atmosphere of Beta Pictoris b. Then something unexpected happened. A strange signal appeared where they expected to see only dust. Instead of ignoring it, the scientists tested whether the signal might be coming from a planet’s atmosphere.

It was. Webb detected the chemical fingerprints of methane, carbon monoxide, and water vapor floating in space. These are gases that form in the atmosphere of a giant planet. The telescope recorded the same signal again weeks later to be sure. Then, an independent team of scientists in Chile looked at years of old photographs of the system and found the same new world.

The newly discovered planet is called Beta Pictoris d. Scientists estimate it is at least twice as massive as Jupiter. Jupiter is so large that more than 1,300 Earths could fit inside it — so Beta Pictoris d is enormous. It orbits its star at about the same distance as Neptune orbits our Sun.

With three known giant planets, Beta Pictoris is only the second star system ever found to have at least three directly observed planets.

Why Does It Matter?

This discovery is exciting for two big reasons. First, it shows that even the most studied corners of space still have secrets. Second, it proves a brand-new way of finding planets. Instead of trying to photograph a planet directly — which is very hard because stars are so much brighter — scientists can now hunt for hidden worlds by reading the gases in their atmospheres. It is like finding an invisible creature by sniffing the air it breathed.

This technique could help astronomers find many more hidden planets around other stars in the future.
