Snap! The World’s Most Amazing Wildlife Photos of 2026 Are Here

Quick Summary

The winners of the 2026 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition were just announced by London’s Natural History Museum. Photographers from around the world entered more than 65,000 images. This year’s young winner is especially inspiring — he was just 14 years old when he took his winning shot!

What Happened?

Every year, the Natural History Museum in London runs one of the most famous nature photography contests on the planet. Anyone can enter, from professional photographers to curious kids. This year, more than 65,000 photos arrived from 121 different countries — a new record.

Judges picked winners in dozens of categories. The top adult prize went to Italian photographer Federico Veronesi for a powerful black-and-white photograph of a female elephant in Namibia’s Huab River Valley. The photo shows the elephant doing something that surprised scientists — carrying a calf that had died. Elephants are known to have strong bonds with their families, and the image gives us a quiet, extraordinary window into animal emotions.

But one of the most exciting prizes went to a young photographer named Oscar Whitfield. He was only 14 years old when he captured his winning shot. Oscar was visiting Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe when he spotted a dung beetle working incredibly hard. Dung beetles are small insects famous for rolling balls of animal droppings — which they use as food and as a nursery for their babies.

Oscar did something bold. He lay flat on the hot ground and pointed his camera right at the beetle’s eye level. The blazing African sun lit up the dust around the tiny worker, creating a picture that looked almost like a movie scene. He called it “Labour of Love.”

Starting October 16, all the winning photos go on display at the Natural History Museum in London, where visitors can see them in person until July 2027.

Why Does It Matter?

Wildlife photography is not just about beautiful pictures. It shows us animals in ways most people never get to see. A great nature photo can make someone care deeply about protecting a species they have never heard of.

The young photographer category is especially important. It reminds kids everywhere that you do not have to be a grown-up to do amazing things. Oscar was 14 when he lay in the African dust and got nose-to-nose with a beetle. His picture is now one of the most celebrated nature photos in the world.

This year was also historic. For the very first time in the competition’s 62-year history, both the adult and the youth grand prizes went to black-and-white photographs.

Big Words

  • Wildlife photographer — a person who takes photos of animals and nature, often in wild or remote places
  • Dung beetle — a small insect that rolls balls of animal droppings, using them as food and a place to lay eggs; they are champion recyclers of nature
  • Microgravity — (not used here — see below)
  • Category — in a contest, a specific group that entries compete within, such as “best underwater photo” or “best photo by a young photographer”
  • Exhibition — a public display of artwork, photos, or objects in a museum or gallery for visitors to enjoy

Fun Fact

Dung beetles are incredible navigators. They use the Milky Way — the faint band of stars stretching across the night sky — to roll their dung balls in a perfectly straight line. They are the only insects known to use the galaxy for directions!

Think About It

If you could photograph any animal in the wild anywhere on Earth, which animal would you choose, where would you go, and what moment would you want to capture?
