Thank You, Teachers! The World Celebrates 60 Years of World Teachers’ Day

Quick Summary

Today, October 5, is World Teachers’ Day! People in countries all around the globe are saying thank you to their teachers. This year is extra special — it marks 60 years of the world working together to protect the teaching profession.

What Happened?

Every year on October 5, the world pauses to honor teachers. The day is organized by UNESCO, the United Nations group that works to protect education everywhere.

This year’s celebration is a big one. Sixty years ago — on October 5, 1966 — world leaders gathered in Paris, France, and made a historic promise. They agreed on a set of rules to protect teachers: their rights, their working conditions, and their freedom to teach well.

That promise was called the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. Think of it like a rulebook the size of a small town’s library — a document that helped millions of teachers around the world be treated fairly.

To mark 60 years of that promise, UNESCO chose this year’s theme: “Standing with Teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”

World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated every October 5 since 1994. This year’s event at UNESCO headquarters in Paris includes award ceremonies, speeches, and a special choir made up of teachers.

The UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development — one of education’s biggest honors — will also be awarded today to recognize extraordinary educators.

Why Does It Matter?

Teachers do one of the most important jobs in the world. They help children learn to read, solve problems, ask good questions, and dream big.

But in many countries, teachers face big challenges. They sometimes work long hours. They do not always have the supplies they need. They do not always earn enough money for such important work.

World Teachers’ Day asks everyone — governments, families, and students — to think about how to better support teachers. A well-supported teacher can change a student’s whole life.

You probably know a teacher who has made a difference for you. Today is the perfect day to say thank you!
