The World’s Fastest Teens! The U20 Athletics World Championships Wraps Up in Eugene Today
Quick Summary
The 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships has just finished its final day of competition at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. More than 1,800 young track and field athletes from 147 countries competed across five action-packed days. Records were broken and future stars showed the world what they can do.
What Happened?
Every two years, the world’s best teenage track and field athletes gather for the World Athletics U20 Championships. These athletes must be 19 or younger — meaning many of them are still in high school or just a few years older!
This year’s event was held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon — one of the most famous athletics stadiums in the world. Eugene is sometimes called TrackTown USA because it loves running so much. It has hosted the World Athletics Championships, the U.S. Olympic Trials, and now this incredible junior championship.
More than 1,800 athletes from 147 countries competed across 46 different events, from the 100-meter sprint to the hammer throw, the high jump to the steeplechase. It is one of the biggest youth athletics competitions on the planet.
One of the most exciting moments came in the mixed 4×100-meter relay — a brand-new event where teams of two men and two women pass a baton around the track as fast as possible. Italy’s team of four young runners blazed around the track in 41.21 seconds, setting a world record for under-20 athletes! Great Britain finished second and the United States came in third.
In the women’s steeplechase — a race where runners jump over barriers and water pits — Ethiopia’s Almaz Yohannis crossed the finish line first. Ethiopia’s athletes had an excellent championships overall, showcasing incredible depth in distance running.
Australia’s Issac Beacroft also dazzled the crowd in the men’s 5,000-meter race walk, finishing in 18 minutes and 40 seconds — a new world record for under-20 walkers!
Why Does It Matter?
The U20 World Championships is where tomorrow’s Olympic champions take their first big step. Many athletes who win here go on to become world-famous stars. This year’s champions will be names to watch at future Olympics and World Championships.
For kids watching at home, it is also a reminder that hard work and training can carry you all the way to the world stage — even as a teenager.
